Super Mario Bros.: Kingdom Troubles was released by Hello in the summer of 2007. Kingdom Troubles is a fairly standard 2-D platform game with a main overworld map and includes many of the features MFGGers have come to expect from Hello games, including extensive use of Black Squirrel tilesets. The Bunny Hood and Hammer Suit are the only special power-ups from newer Hello games to appear in Kingdom Troubles. One of the final airship levels, Bowser's Terror, is obviously a reference to Hello's earlier game Super Mario Bros.: Bowser's Terror.

Story

As with most Hello games, the story doesn't play a significant role in the game play. One dark and stormy night, Bowser kidnapped Peach and threatened to raise a massive army in preparation of another attack on the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario's been called in to go to Bowser's Castle and give Bowser the boot. Kingdom Troubles uses an original (but hardly difficult) final boss, although the story and ending still leave something to be desired.

Levels

Kingdom Troubles has 35 levels, spread throughout four worlds: a standard grassy/hilly area, a desert, an icy land, and a dark world similar to World 8 in Super Mario Bros. 3. This pattern is very similar to many of Hello's other games, including Super Mario Bros.: Bowser's Terror. Some levels can only be unlocked by finding hidden exits in other levels. Kingdom Troubles, while not particularly innovative, does include a handful of interesting levels, including Surreal Seabottom, a cave level where Mario is able to swim, inexplicably. The later levels in particular can be quite challenging. While Kingdom Troubles is a fairly linear game, there are a few extra features that boost replay value, like trying to discover all the Ace Coins in each level and finding the secret levels.

Music

Hello uses some MIDI files in this game, although MP3s supply the background music in most levels. Much the music comes from OC Remix, and there are also some MP3s of Super Mario 64 tunes.

Reception

Kingdom Troubles has received a number of very favorable reviews from players praising its good engine and skillful level design, but it also has its detractors. One of the biggest problems with the game is its enormous size - decompressed, the executable file weighs in at over ten megabytes, making it one of the biggest fangames ever. Others have complained about its lack of originality, as well as certain glitches in the young engine, like the tendency for certain sprites to bob up and down, the lack of a pause feature, and problems jumping from falling platforms. Most of these issues have been corrected in later games. VinnyVideo says SMB: Kingdom Troubles is the game that inspired him to work harder on his own games, especially Marioy 2.
