Normal Super Mario Bros. 3 was a fangame created by gamester using Game Maker, and was released at MFGG in 2010. It is the sequel to Normal Super Mario Bros. 2 and the third and final title in the Normal Super Mario Bros. series. It is one of the highest-rated games on the site, with an average score of 9.1 / 10. It is also the 15th most downloaded game on the site. At the end of 2009, Normal Super Mario Bros. 3 won in several categories at MFGG Awards, but since the original phpBB forums have been lost, the specific categories are unknown.

Gameplay

The map screen shown at the start and end of the game.

Whilst the first game had Mario as the single playable character, and the second game had Toad, NSMB3 puts Luigi under the control of the player. The game starts out on a map screen similar to the one seen in the original NES Super Mario Bros. 3. Once entering the first level, you are taken to a blank room with a single Question Block. Inside it contains a Mushroom disguised as a Fuzzy from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, which causes a "Fuzzy level overflow" and the real game to unfold.

Like the other NSMB games, you have to complete a level essentially under the influence of drugs. Random sprites and shapes constantly spawn around the screen during gameplay, and the screen teeters left and right.

During the level, the theme changes between different types of level. It starts off as a regular grassland level, then moves between an underwater level, a cave level, an auto-scrolling airship level and finally a castle level.

What is new in this game compared to the other two games is the 5 collectible items found throughout the level, similar to the Star Coins found in the New Super Mario Bros. games. These items are (in the order they appear):

  • A Magic Wand from SMB3
  • Mr Saturn from the Earthbound games
  • The Triforce from the Legend of Zelda games
  • A Nintendo Entertainment System
  • Pac-Man

Also, similar to the first Normal game, various different things come out of Question Blocks, as oppose to regular coins, such as Kirby, Mega Man, Link, the Ghosts from Pac-Man and the Screw Attack icon from the Metroid series. Luigi also gets to use powerups based on Bomberman and Balloon Fight. During the airship level, the Awesome Face, an internet meme, appears as an obstacle being fired from cannons. At the end of the castle level, you have to fight a Hippie from the Earthbound games.

After completing the level, you are returned back to the map screen, and you gain access to a castle level. However, entering the level causes a frenzy of "foot errors" to appear, causing the game to end abruptly. This is a reference to how the first two games end, where the games make it seems like the player has completed the level, but a giant foot then flattens the player and causes a Game Over.
