Old Super Mario Bros. is a fangame made by Noone using Game Maker 6. It is based off of the original NES game Super Mario Bros. and uses Hello's Open Source SMB1 Engine. However, while the levels use several elements from the originals, they are brand new. The game has both Mario Brothers and can be played with either 8-bit SMB1 graphics, sounds, and music or 16-bit SMAS ones.

Gameplay

The gameplay is very to that of Super Mario Bros. You use Z to run and attack and X to jump. The instructions claim you can use Shift to release your storage item, but no such feature exists. You can also choose whether Mario/Luigi always runs.

History

The game was first announced on the forum, where Version 1 was released. As he continued, he made additional versions, adding additional features and bug fixes. The game received great reception and the community helped squash several of the game's bugs. The game was then uploaded to YoYo Games on August 15, 2007 and to the main site on September 12, 2007.

However, production could not last forever. The last post to the Old Super Mario Bros. topic was made on November 14, 2007, and on May 4, 2008, Noone uploaded the open source to YoYo Games, with the description reading "I quit. Read the readme." With this said, Old Super Mario Bros. was officially declared scrapped.

Levels

World 1

Stage 1

World 1-1 is a regular grassland level. It features Goombas, Koopas, Mushrooms, and other typical grassland fare. It also contains a Mega Mushroom from New Super Mario Bros.

Stage 2

World 1-2, much like 1-1, is similar, but different, to the Super Mario Bros. stage of the same name. It features standard underground fare and the traditional Warp Zone.

Stage 3

World 1-3 is another standard level that borrows its theme from Super Mario Bros. Mario/Luigi jump on Mushroom Platforms and Clouds until you reach the grass ledge at the end.

Stage 4

Being the first castle, World 1-4 is another Super Mario Bros.-based stage. It also houses the game's only Bowser fight.

World 2

Level 1

Here the game stops pulling themes from Super Mario Bros. and introduces a desert stage. This stage also has a Pokey, the first of the new enemies.

Level 2

World 2-2 is another desert stage. It features the main features of World 2-1, but with a new layout.

Level 3

World 2-3 features a mix of World 1-3 and World 2-1. This is also the only level in the game to feature quicksand.

Level 4

This level takes Mario/Luigi into a pyramid, where they must overcome many obstacles in order to get to World 3.

World 3

Level 1

This is the game's first water level, and also the first to lack tiles. Other than the lack of tiles, it's a standard water level.

Level 2

Normally, this stage cannot be reached because the room placement causes the game to skip to 3-3. This level is, while another water stage, the only level in World 3 to have tiles! However, while the solid placement is identical to that of World 3-1, the tile placement is completely new.

Level 3

World 3-3 is a Cheep-Cheep Bridge stage, and a replica of the 2-3 from Super Mario Bros. Like 3-1, this level has no tiles.

World 4

Level 1

This level is a giantland, inspired by Mario 3's Big Island. Here everything is giant, and this is the last world to use tiles.

Level 2

World 4-2 continues the giantland theme, and is one of the only two levels to use the Mega Mushroom.

Level 3

Loaded after World 8-4, this isn't actually a stage; it restarts the game! It is, however, called 4-3 in the game data.

World 5

This level starts as s new stage, with nods to World 4-1 of Super Mario Bros. However, about halfway through, the level turns into World 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. From here-on, "World 1-1" will refer to the Super Mario Bros. stage. As usual, there are no tiles.

World 6

This level is a complete remake of World 1-1 without tiles. This, along with World 7, are called "1-1" by the game.

World 7

Like World 5, this stage starts original and then turns into 1-1. However, this time the original part ends near the beginning.

World 8

The first part of World 8-4, the only level in World 8, starts and ends with original level design. However, the middle is World 1-1. The second part is a fully-original underground stage.
