Super Mario Bros. (SMB) is a platforming video game that not only created the Mario universe as we know today, but was a landmark Nintendo title of the 1980s, revolutionizing the gaming industry forever.

Super Mario Bros. was a launch title for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), and was released on the September 13th, 1985 in Japan (with an American release on October 18th, 1985, and a May 15th, 1987 release in Europe). It is perhaps the most recognized title in the Mario Bros series, because it is currently one of the best selling video games of all time. The engine was later re-used to create the Japan-only, Super Mario Bros. 2 (known as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels everywhere else), and the game has been re-released many times on other platforms. Most notably would be the release of Super Mario All Stars, which saw the game revamped to use 16 bit sprites.

This was the first Mario game to be set in the Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser Koopa kidnaps The Princess, and Mario (along with Luigi) go to save her. After defeating him in the castle in the fourth level of any world (excluding 8-4), Mario or Luigi is greeted by a Toad who declares the iconic line, "Thank you, Mario! But our princess is in another castle".
