Mario Land: Minigame Mayhem is a fangame created by Kritter, which started in Mid 2003 as an MFGG fangame. The original game starred Mario in a theme park called MFGG Land, in which all the MFGGers had stalls with minigames that Mario could play for coins.

It originally featured hand-made sprites and graphics, but was later changed to M&L style sprites and backgrounds, which caused Kritter to remove all the MFGG members, and replace them with characters and sprites from the game. Originally, a lot of the minigames were created by the MFGG members as well, but now Kritter makes all the minigames on his own.

Though Kritter may one day include the MFGGers in the game as trophy prizes, due to a large number of MFGG members being sprited in M&L style by Starpower.

Gameplay Mechanics

Overworld The overworld of the game is a huge, top-down, sprawling theme park, with dozens of minigame stalls, people who walk around and you can talk to them, and things to see and do. The basic look and feel is like that of any RPG, a top-down world. You can talk to people which brings up a dialogue box, and can accept their minigames.

Minigames Minigames cost coins to play, and the cost of the game depends on the difficulty of the game, or how much you can earn in return, ranging from 0 to 15 so far. You start off with 0 coins, but can seek out Toadsworth for a 20 coin prize, which he will give you each time you fall short of cash. Once you have coins, you can begin spending them however you see fit.

Playing a minigame will cost a certain amount of coins, usually if you win the minigame, you can get more coins back in return, such as paying 5 to play and getting 10 in return if you win. If you lose however, you will not get your coins back.

Then plan later is to have unlockable objects you can purchase with coins as well, such as trophies and awards, which you can view later on, in the main menu or somewhere in the park. Another idea is that you also have a fairy called GenFairy, who will follow you around, and offer hints on minigames if you need them.

To save your game, you must make a deposit in the bank, which will save your coin amount, and to continue playing, you must withdraw your coins from the bank.

Minigames

The core of Minigame Mayhem is, of course, the minigames, which are all themed as sideshow type games generally, each one having a host who will explain the basic rules and ask you if you want to play. Here are some general descriptions of the minigames completed so far.

  • Treetop Turmoil - A light will display a colour (one of 7), and you must stand on the corresponding treetop colour as quickly as possible. The trees that are NOT that colour, will suddenly flare up and you will lose if you touch the flames. The minigame goes quicker as it goes until you win.
  • Fireball Frenzy - Two Piranha plants at either end will spit bouncing fireballs randomly. The fireballs will bounce at 3 different heights, two which can be walked under, and one that needs to be jumped over. You must survive for 1 minute, without touching 5 fireballs.
  • Whack a mole - Whack as many moles as you can, you get coins based on how many you can whack coming out of the pipes. Very fast paced, you must also avoid hitting Bob-Ombs and Luigi, because they will lose you points.
  • Bullet Bill Barrage - A ship in the distance will shoot bullet bills into the air, and they will rain down upon the short island you are standing on, causing an explosion. You must avoid the explosions, if you hit one, it will bounce you around. Get thrown too far and you end up in the water, and lose the game.
  • Popple's Strength Test - Wait for Popple to give the signal, then press button 1 as soon as he does, the quicker you do it, the more you can win. You must get at least 10 coins on the strength meter to get your coins back, if you hit the top of the meter, you double your coin amount.
  • Rotating Rope Jump - A fire rope will spin around in a circle, and you must jump it each time it comes around. Avoid hitting the rope, or else you will lose. Each 5 jumps causes it to spin faster.
  • Memory Match - Use your hammer to whack 9 of the blocks on the ground, to try destroy the 3 matching pairs within 15 seconds. One block will freeze you for a second.
  • Hedge Maze - Navigate through the hedge maze, avoiding spineys who will spin along the ground at you if you get near them. Your goal is to find 2 randomly placed Firebrand spheres before the time runs out.
  • Conveyer Belt Carnage - Avoid walking and flying Bob-Ombs, and explosive barrels along a conveyer belt in this game. After 15 seconds, the conveyer belt will begin to move randomly left or right, increasing the difficulty of he game, though you can win a good amount of coins if you beat it.
  • Addiction Addition - Count how many Bob-ombs cross the screen, making sure not to include the ones that explode, and place a guess at the end, if you're correct, you win.
  • Card Game - Pick a card at random. The cards display 5 pictures, a Bowser Card which will lose you 10 coins, a poison mushroom which will lose you 5, a normal mushroom which gains 5, a 1-up shroom which gains 10, and a star, which gains 15 coins. You can only choose one card.
  • Block Luck - A game of luck, in which two blocks travel down a pipe and come out with a random number from 1-6, if yours is higher than your opponent, you win.
  • Platform Panic - You are standing on platforms, above a spike pit. Randomly, blocks will start to get destroyed, and you must stay on the blocks until there is only 1 left to stand on. If you can remain on the platforms without falling from a destroyed one, you win.
  • EZ Capsule - A capsule machine with 10 random prize capsules, each containing a different coin amount.
  • Moneybag Capsule: +5 coins
  • Mushroom Capsule: +10 coins
  • Star Capsule: +15 coins
  • Thwomp Capsule: -5 coins
  • Bowser Capsule: -10 coins
  • Bowletta Capsule: -15 coins
  • Empty Capsule: dud capsule
  • Luigi Capsule: random coins, up to 10
  • Toad Capsule: +1 coin
  • Card Capsule: random coins, win or lose 5, 10 or 15, depending what the card shows
  • Slot Machine - Play the slot machine to win or lose coins. Both sides of the slots display numbers 1 to 6, while the middle slot displays a + or - sign, and depending when you stop it, you can win or lose coins. Can win up to 12 or lose 5.
  • Tug of War - Watch a block, which shows one of 4 directions. If the block is green, you must quickly press in the direction it displays, and if you do before it disappears, you will move left. If you press it when it is orange, you will be tugged to the right. Sometimes the block will be half green and half orange, so you must wait to see what colour it changes to. You win by dragging the other player into the pit.
  • Mushroom Chance - Pick one of 8 mushrooms at random, and if it is a good mushroom, you win coins and can choose again to win more or leave with your earnings. If it is a bad mushroom, you lose the coins you had currently earned.
  • Musical Matchup - Watch the coloured blocks for their musical sequence, which is 6 random notes. Then match the notes in sequence, by clicking the same blocks. Each time you are correct, the sequence will speed up. Match all 4 sequences correctly to win.
  • Whack a mole - Whack as many moles as you can, you get coins based on how many you can whack coming out of the pipes. Very fast paced, you must also avoid hitting Bob-Ombs and Luigi, because they will lose you points.
  • Thwomps Platform Challenge 1 - A classic, platformer style level, in which you must stomp and dodge enemies. However, you must also collect hidden Yoshi eggs, and take them to the finish. You get coins depending on how many eggs you rescued.
  • Fuse Frenzy - Whack a fuse with your hammer, and watch the fire travel up to light the furnace. Bob-Ombs will walk from side to side, and you must not hit them, or else you lose. If you light one, you get coins and can choose to light more, or quit with your earnings.
  • Moneybag Shuffle - 4 moneybags will shuffle and spin randomly, with one of the bags containing a prize of 10 coins. Watch that bag closely, and pick which one it is when they stop spinning to win.
  • Panel Flip Risk - Pick as many panels as you dare, with prizes such as +1, +3 or +5 coins. You can quit at any time with your money, or gamble on to get more, but if you hit a Bowser Panel, you lose all that you earned.

Due to a Hard Drive crash, Kritter lost literally year of progress on this game, as well as MMF itself but recently reaquired a copy of MMF and began diligently working on this game. Most minigames have already been remade along with a whole bunch of new ones.
