Super Mario Bros. (SMB), not to be confused with Mario Bros., a game made previously, is a Mario platforming game that not only created the Mario universe as we know today, but was a landmark Nintendo title of the 1980s, revolutionizing the gaming industry for good.
Super Mario Bros. was a launch title for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), and was released on the 13th September 1985 in Japan (with an American release on the 18th October of the same year, and a 15th May 1987 release in Europe). It is perhaps the most recognized incarnation of the Mario Bros, because it is currently the best selling video game of all time. The engine was later re-used to create the Japan-only, "Super Mario Bros. 2" ("Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels" everywhere else), and the game has been re-released several times on other platforms. Most notably would be the release of Super Mario All Stars, which saw the game revamped to use 16 bit sprites.
This was the first Mario game to be set in the Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser Koopa kidnaps The Princess, and Mario goes to save her. After defeating him in the castle in World x-4 (excluding 8-4), Mario is greeted by a Toad who famously tells him "Thank you, Mario! But our princess is in another castle".
