BMP, or Bitmap, is an archaic graphic data format that stores raw data with little to no compression. It i featured prominently in slightly different forms on Windows and OS-X machines.
Due to the low compression, bitmap files look nice, but their file sizes are outrageous. Although some editors can compress BMP, it is far more effective to save any given BMP file as a PNG.
Prior to Windows Vista, MSPaint's default image format was BMP.
