BMP (bitmap image) is a common file format used to store images. It is quite notorious for generating images with large file sizes, which makes it unsuitable for posting on the internet. Some image manipulation programs allow BMPs to be saved with basic compression, which can reduce a BMP's size significantly, but nowhere near as effectively as that of PNG, GIF, or JPG.

BMP, or Bitmap, is an archaic graphic data format that stores raw data with little to no compression. It i featured prominently in slightly different forms on Windows and OS-X machines.

Due to the low compression, bitmap files look nice, but their file sizes are outrageous. Although some editors can compress BMP, it is far more effective to save any given BMP file as a PNG.

Prior to Windows Vista, MSPaint's default image format was BMP.
