The Koopa Bros.: Back in Action is the first Paper Mario short film developed by E-Man. Despite it being one of E-Man's Paper Mario shorts, he does not consider it part of the main series he's working on, the Paper Mario Chronicles. Outside of some possible references, this short is not meant to impact the main series in any major way. That way, it can be a standalone short the viewers have the choice of watching without subtracting anything of importance from the main series.

Synopsis
After five or so years since the events of the first Paper Mario game, the Koopa Bros. have fallen on some hard times. With Bowser's diminishing interest in the four Koopas, they have yet to receive a new assignment from the Koopa king. As a result, their nearly barren fortress is in a state of disrepair. In an attempt to regain Bowser's favor, the Koopa Bros. decide to kidnap one of Mario's original party members from his first adventure for use in a hostage situation. Unfortunately, this plan ends up giving the Koopa Bros. more than they bargained for when even the "weakest" of Mario's partners proves that kidnapping him is rather challenging.
See everyone's favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle knockoffs deal with trails such as an angry father obsessed with a rickety gate, making a deal with a mercenary of a giant turtle, getting into a fistfight with the local postman, and almost becoming an accomplice of a ghost with dodgy interests; however, is their biggest threat the sheer incompetence of the team's leader, Red?
Current Progress
- Mario's sheet is now updated, but there is some possible tweaking to the puppet rig when all the remaining character sheets are ready.
- All character outlines are finished.
- All normal Koopa characters have yet to be shaded fully.
- Kent C. Koopa has yet to be shaded fully, but he only has his feet and hand to deal with.
- The Big Lantern Ghost's sprite sheet is completely ready.
- All Goomba sheets are completed
- Puppet rigging will begin once all sprite sheets are completed.
- The current draft of the script is planned for another rewrite, but a new writer has yet to be found.
Trivia
- E-Man was originally planning on jumping straight into the development of the Paper Mario Chronicles after his first test short was over; however, he got the idea to "test the waters" with a simpler short once a member of the VG Resource, Kosheh, mentioned that he would "win the internet" if he made an episode about the Koopa Bros.
- The short's script has gone through a few rewrites by a few different people. E-Man wrote the original script, Kosheh rewrote a few pages, E-Man rewrote the whole script following Kosheh's advice, and P.T. Piranha of Lemmy's Land fame rewrote the script at E-Man's request. Currently, E-Man is still trying to perfect the script to ensure that it has a good flow and the dialog is not forced.
- Even though this detail is not finalized yet, E-Man plans to voice most of the characters for this episode, including Mario. The only exceptions are the three other Koopa Bros. (not counting Red) because he wants to give them more distinct voices that he is unable to provide. Of course, Keyska is under consideration for joining this project as a voice actor and it's actually possible that he might end up voicing Mario instead.
- The Lonely Goomba of YouTube fame is planned to appear as a brief cameo in this short. E-Man even has most of his sprites ready.
