Super Mario Melatonin was Kaepora and Someguy's first place minigame collaboration for the 13th Minigame Competition, which had the theme of "dreams". The gameplay consists of two levels - one being a slightly repetitive introductory level with a repeating New Super Mario Brtothers backdrop, and the other being Mario's "dream castle". While not made obvious, it is under assumption from most who played the game that the player is not aware that Mario's dreaming until he reaches the castle.

Reception

The reception was fantastic on the forums, yet due to confusion what the game was about, and what was it's theme, it is commonly misconceived by the reviewers who exclusively visit the official site. It suffers from having very diverse reviews - while having an incredibly smooth engine, the game remains sporadic, and almost 'plagued' with dry humor. This comes as befuddling to those who were expecting a great Mario Brothers clone. Many players are also unaware that the game showcases Mario's dream - this is odd, considering the placement of the word "Melatonin" in the title, along with the author's description.

Also, the game has sudden loud noises, such as Mario screaming at the very end. There are also rapid flashing colors in the second level, which may cause epileptic seizures to some players (there is a warning about this).

Sequel

A sequel to the game, which is Super Mario Melatonin 3 (Super Mario Melatonin 2 was never seen anywhere in the internet, it's currently unknown if it was even made), was made. It is originally as an entry for NCFC 2007. It was released on the main site in August 19, 2016.

Trivia

  • Super Mario Melatonin is the first fangame to use New Super Mario Brothers sprites, along with official music from the game.
  • Super Mario Melatonin is Kaepora and Someguy's first finished project released to the public.
  • The codename, as seen in the credits, was Nightmare.
  • A password is obtained at the end of the game if the player collects enough coins. Kaepora had once accidentally released a prototype however that did not allow this. The password may be included in a future Tech Wing minigame due to Super Mario Melatonin's unpopularity.
  • The first level is featured in another small game by them, Super Mario Cowabunga!, as it is a kind of spiritual successor, sans some of the disliked features of SMM.
