Super Mario Flashback is a fangame that is currently being developed by Mors and the Flashback Team. It brings back older levels from the series and combines the mechanics of 2D and 3D Super Mario titles. It's currently in progress.

The music is made of existing Super Mario tunes, which were remixed by Can of Nothing and a few guest musicians. The original version of Super Mario Flashback used sprites that were made by Mit, along with some edits and custom sprites. On July 6th, 2017 Mors decided to switch to a new engine. Alongside this switch, the game started to use a completely new art style.

The latest proper demo was released on MFGG on October 30, 2016, but an engine test of the new engine was released for SAGE 2017 later.

Reception

Super Mario Flashback's first demo received very positive reviews at the main site. People praised it for its soundtrack, graphics, and engine, but it got criticized for the broken gamepad support, as well as other various glitches. It currently holds an average score of 8.9/10. The same demo won the Game of the Month award of August 2015. On MFGG Awards 2015 it was nominated for 10 awards (Best Game Overall, Best Demo, Best Sprites, Best Engine, Best Level Design, Most Polished, Most Anticipated, Best Concept, Best Setting and Best Use of Site Resources), while it only won 4 of them (Best Demo, Best Engine, Most Polished and Best Use of Site Resources).

The second demo received less positive feedback than the first one, but it was still highly praised. The third demo also managed to get highly praised despite its issues. On MFGG Awards 2016, the game got tied for Best Game Overall and Best Sprites.
