Super Mario Classic Two: Mushroom Archipelago is the third Super Mario Classic game developed by Zero Kirby. It is the official sequel to Super Mario Classic: Return, and the second (obviously) game in the "true" storyline.
Story
The title screen to SMCT. After the events of Super Mario Classic: Return, Mario and Princess Peach return to the Mushroom Kingdom, which sees an abnormally long time of peace. Getting bored from this long reprieve, Mario sets out on a walk to ease his nerves when he is promptly attacked and captured by pirates.
Stored aboard their ship, Mario has to make his way through their fleet and fight the captain.
After all this is said and done, Mario discovers he is in the Mushroom Archipelago, a lost series of islands scattered across the Mushroom Sea. To satisfy his boredom, he plans to traverse the sea and discover all the islands and reap the rewards. But of course, he'll need a boat...
Gameplay
The gameplay takes a very drastic turn from the Super Mario Classic norm. The previous games used an overworld styled platforming mode; this one uses a straight 2-D viewpoint. Also, the previous two games had the infamous Light Beams; however they have yet to be confirmed for Archipelago.
To make up for the lack of Light Beams, Zero Kirby has added a slide, much like you would see in Mega Man or Kirby. Using the slide, you can attack certain enemies and reach new places... however you have to be travelling at a certain speed to damage enemies, and you cannot slide if your back is too close to a wall.
There's also the seafaring mode. In it, you wander the sea map and visit the different islands and even Toad Town. At Toad Town, you can freely explore the area. Bonus missions have also been planned.
Development
The engine is one of Zero's smoothest; it has very few glitches. It's also reached the First Level Demo, and has gotten some praise for the atmosphere almost perfectly portraying a pirate feel.
The First World Demo will be released on the Main Site, after which, only screenshots and occasional videos will be shown, up to World Three. After that, no more information regarding the game will be released until the final edition.
