Super Mario Bros Super Quest is one of Mario350's first fangames and his first ever platformer. Unlike many of the first ever games of other MFGGers, this one uses a custom engine, made entirely from scratch. The demo currently contains 3 levels and Mario and Toad as playable characters. However, it is likely that it will never be completed due to the negative reception that it received.

Story

Peach, as usual, has been kidnapped by Bowser, so it's up to both Mario and Toad to rescue her.

Gameplay

The demo contains 3 levels, and Mario and Toad as its playable characters. In order to play the game, the player must choose only one of them.

The game itself should play like a generic platformer. However it has many flaws and glitches that were considered to prevent it from playing as such:

  • Trying to move by pressing either the left or right button will make the player immediately run super fast, with no controlled acceleration or speed whatsoever.
  • The enemies vibrate and don't move.
  • When jumping, stomping, dying, or doing pretty much anything else, the character will always say something via loud voice clips, such as "YAHOO!", "OKEY-DOKEY", "YEAH!", etc. People find this as incredibly irritating, as doing these actions is almost every-time necessary.
  • The collision detection system can make the player get stuck in walls or blocks.
  • Enemies are poorly resized.
  • The playable characters have exactly the same abilities and statistics, although Toad can't jump as high as Mario. Some parts of the levels couldn't be past with Toad, due to his low maximum jump height, therefore making it impossible to complete the game as Toad.

Due to these flaws and glitches, it's hardly possible to complete any of the levels.

Reception

Pretty much like all of Mario350's fangames, the demo of Super Mario Bros Super Quest received heavy criticism and negative reviews in the main site. It currently holds an average score of 1/10. Reviewers panned the clashing and overused graphics, generic and overused music, badly resized sprites and tiles, stretched backgrounds and mostly, the several gameplay glitches and extremely loud and frequent voice clips. However, some reviewers saw Mario350's attempts to make a custom engine as a compliment.
