Super Mario Bros: Shine Expedition is Hello's first fangame of 2009. It uses a hub-like main level that connects to four main worlds: a hilly area, a beach level, a cavern, and a desert, similar to Super Mario Bros.: Revenge of Bowser. Music comes from recent Mario Wii games and uses the Ogg Vorbis format. Hello uses a new opening screen for the first time.

SMB: Shine Expedition includes a number of new features, like Toads who talk to you and sometimes hand out items or play quizzes with you for Shines. These quizzes often allude to MFGGers like Black Squirrel and Guinea and to Hello's earlier games.

The Shine-collecting premise has been used in Super Mario Bros. Shine Pursuit, and similar concepts in other Hello games. However, the introduction of Blue Coins needed to unlock doors and the nonlinear approach makes the game quite different from other collect-the-stuff games. The four Switch Palaces also add interest and require some degree of patience in order to access them all.

Story

Bowser is preparing another attack on the Mushroom Kingdom, but Peach knows of a way to stop him. If Mario can find 80 Shines hidden throughout the land, Peach can create a seal that will keep Bowser away.

Reception

Super Mario Bros: Shine Expedition has gotten excellent reviews from most MFGGers, except for some who have slow computers, as this is a very memory-intensive game.
