Super Mario Bros. X (スーパーマリオブラザーズX, Sūpā Mario Burazāzu Ekkusu?) (commonly referred to as SMBX or Super Mario X) is a side-scrolling fan game based off the popular Super Mario series created by Andrew Spinks. The game features a level editor that allows players to create their own levels using elements from Super Mario Bros. 1, Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Zelda II and Super Metroid. The game first debuted on June 25, 2009 as the version 1.0.1.

Main Game

Many different Episodes have came with the Main Game of Super Mario Bros. X. The Princess Cliche, The Invasion, The Great Castle Adventure, and the Invasion 2, the most recently, and last Redigit-released game from the official site. Super Mario Bros. X 1.2 was the first version of Super Mario Bros. X that included The Invasion 2.The Invasion 2 is not the sequel but the update of The Invasion, except with levels slightly changed to include new features, custom graphics, moving layers and new power-ups. Some levels were practically made into new levels. Super Mario Bros. X 1.2.1 included time stopping power-ups and Pow Block. Super Mario Bros. X 1.2.2 included blue coins.

Super Mario Brothers X has many Power-Ups. Old and New. Such as the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, Super Leaf, Tanooki Suit, Hammer Suit, Ice Flower and many other Power-ups.

Super Mario Brothers X has many enemies from older Super Mario games to Zelda to even Metroid.

Level Editor

The Level Editor can make any kind level or world the player can imagine for whatever the purpose you desire. He/she can make whole episodes where either it works like in Super Mario Bros. series where the player beat levels to advance, or like in Super Mario World where the player advance through a map screen, or like in Super Mario 64 where the player starts out in a HUB world and must collect stars to advance. Plus, the player of the game can make stand-alone levels just for fun.

Updates, History, and the Community

The original and first version of Super Mario Bros. X was released on June 25th, 2009 as the version 1.0.1. It contained few enemies, blocks, and features. Custom graphics and music were not possible yet, with versions 1.1 and 1.2 that came out soon there after with minor updates added. The official forums, known now by the community as the "original" forums, were opened.

Beta versions were released entering the year of 2010. Super Mario Bros. X 1.2 Beta 3 and Beta 4 were released to public and were the largest updates up to that point, adding water, tile slopes, the ability to have custom graphics and music. These beta versions, however, were not official releases of the game (similar to builds) - making Super Mario Bros. X 1.2.1 the largest SMBX version ever released. The version contained many background items and NPC updates, as well as fixing nearly all previous game bugs and issues.

Version 1.2.2 was released in early July of 2010, famous for adding Peach, Toad, and Link as playable characters. On August 3rd, 2010, the SMBX forums were taken offline. Redigit, Kyasarin, and Luminous had grown tired of "babysitting the community", the only concrete reason for the disappearance. bikcmp, a network operator for FOSSnet (the IRC network where #smbx is located), opened up new forums a few days later. They were open for two weeks, and bikcmp describes that time as "the worst two weeks of my life". After those forums were taken down, users began to flock to Knuckles96's forum (originally created for his episode, The Great Empire), as it was the only active forum left.

On August 25th, 2010, CaptainTrek (another network operator of FOSSnet) opened the new official SMBX forums, known now by the community as TrekWeb. Redigit "handed over the torch" to this forum and linked it from the original SMBX website. About 5-6 weeks later, the SMBX splash screen was updated (along with SuperMarioBrothers.org) with a new video from Redigit's YouTube channel that showcased the Ice Flower. This notified the community that Redigit had been working on a new version, and a little bit later a video called "Battle Mode" was posted as well. On October 20th, 2010, Super Mario Bros. X Version 1.3 was released to the public. This version included Custom NPCs (originally found in Build 59), along with firebars, Battle Mode, and more graphics and bug fixes.

In January 2011, Redigit secretly began work on Terraria with a small team of people from the SMBX forums (most, if not all, were SMBX beta testers). At this time, also, TrekWeb went down for the first time due to hardware failure. CaptainTrek chose to start the forums over from scratch; this event resulted in the loss of some members, most of which likely flocked to Knuckles96's forum again. In February, TrekWeb went down again - this time so CaptainTrek could take a break. The forums were brought back up, but during this time Redigit said that SMBX 1.4 would likely not be out for a while, if at all. In April 2011, Redigit officially announced that SMBX was cancelled. CaptainTrek also closed TrekWeb.

Shortly afterward, Redigit received a call from Nintendo's lawyers with a cease and desist, telling him to take down SMBX (along with all of his YouTube videos) and hand over SuperMarioBrothers.org. Redigit complied with everything except the last condition (and didn't give his website over until sometime in 2012). This caused a scare among some members of the community, with people removing their videos for fear of copyright infringement. Nintendo did not end up coming to anyone else about SMBX.

bikcmp, CaptainTrek, Spitfire, and the other FOSSnet staff members agreed in June 2011 to merge their IRC network with a network known as KottNet. October 2011 brought disputes between the network staff, and bikcmp decided to start a new IRC network called IronDust. #smbx was moved there. In mid-2012, IronDust ended up with the same fate as FOSSnet - it merged with a network named IRCNode.

By 2012, there were two divisions of the SMBX community - Knuckles96's (Knux's) forums were the most popular (largely due to traffic flow out of the official forums), but there was also another forum referred to as "NSMBXForums". This forum was widely considered a carbon-copy of Knux's forums, but with younger users. In July 2013, the administrators of NSMBXForums were convinced to merge into a new forum, named "SMBX: Revived" and referred to as "SMBXR".

In late 2013, a committee was formed to discuss the merging of the SMBX community under one roof. The administrators from Knux's Forums and the administrators from SMBXR, along with Joey and Ignoritus, were part of this committee. Joey volunteered to host the new forums, so development began. A merge date was set for December 20th, but complaints from Knux caused the date to be pushed back to January 1st, 2014. Joey's forums still opened on the 20th, but both Knux's Forums and SMBXR stayed open temporarily. The SMBX IRC was moved back to KottNet, which still had the data from FOSSnet, including user registrations. On January 1st, the assumed merge date, Knux impulsively went on the new forums and deleted each board, losing all of the users' posts dating back to the 20th. This meant that Knux had cancelled the merge and was going to keep his forums open, as he was afraid that he would lose power. This caused an outrage among the community, with many users leaving Knux's forums in favor of the newly created forums (which restored the original SMBX forum theme, among other things). At this time of writing (January 2014), SMBXR has been closed Knux's forums receives only marginal traffic and has been described by Knux as "a library".

The SMBX forums exist now at http://www.supermariobrosx.org/forums. A slightly tweaked version of SMBX is in development (1.3.0.1).

Release on MFGG

Super Mario Bros. X Version 1.1 was released on MFGG in July 2009. It had no music as the music took up too much space, however the download on the official website included the music. To this date, no newer version has been released on MFGG due to the enormous size of this game. It currently has a rating of 9.2 on the main site.
