(commonly referred to as SMBX or Super Mario X) is a side-scrolling fan game based off the popular Super Mario series created by Andrew Spinks. The game features a level editor that allows players to create their own levels using elements from Super Mario Bros. 1, Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Zelda II and Super Metroid. The game is not endorsed or licensed by Nintendo and is non-canon. The game first debuted on June 25, 2009 as the version 1.0.1.

Level Editor

The Level Editor can make any kind level or world the player can imagine for whatever the purpose you desire. He/she can make whole episodes where either it works like in Super Mario Bros. series where the player beat levels to advance, or like in Super Mario World where the player advance through a map screen, or like in Super Mario 64 where the player starts out in a HUB world and must collect stars to advance. Plus, the player of the game can make stand-alone levels just for fun.

Updates and History

The original and first version of Super Mario Bros. X was released on June 25th, 2009 as the version 1.0.1. It contained few enemies, blocks, and features. Custom graphics and music were not possible yet, with versions 1.1 and 1.2 that came out soon there after with minor updates added.

Then the beta versions were released entering the year of 2010. Super Mario Bros. X 1.2 Beta 3 and Beta 4 where released to public and were the largest updates up to that point, adding water, tile slopes, the ability to have custom graphics, and music. These beta versions however, like build versions, were not official versions of the game- making Super Mario Bros. X 1.2.1 the largest Super Mario Bros. X version ever released. The version contains many background items, and NPC updates as well as many bug and engine fixes that left nearly all previous game bugs and issues gone.

Super Mario Bros. X 1.2.2 was the last official Super Mario Bros. X release made before Redigit "quit" (see below). Super Mario Bros. X 1.2.2 is famous for it's introduction of Link, Princess Peach, and Toad as playable characters. Two build versions had indeed been released after this, Build 43 and Build 59, respectively. These utilized rather innovative new features, including the ability to customize NPCs, previously to be introduced into 1.3. Soon, however, the forums went down, and the Super Mario Bros. X franchise of fan games was widely considered discontinued. This led many to believe that Redigit had abandoned the project. However, Redigit "returned", and the latest of the updates he made in the new version, Super Mario Bros. X 1.3, was the Ice Flower. Since this period, many new features have been introduced into the version, including a Battle Mode, power-ups for various characters, and more. Super Mario Bros. X version 1.3 has been released, including many new features such as quicksand and custom NPC coding.

This, however, is the final release of the game. Redigit, it's creator, has stopped working on it. He claimed that Nintendo e-mailed him asking for the removal of SMBX, as well as a transfer of supermariobrothers.org. He obeyed all of these requests except for the site transfer. This created an outrage in the community, with many being in denial, even to the point of believing Redigit set this up so he could stop working on it. The forums, after a huge data purge, are back and active as well as the IRC chatroom (#smbx on FOSSnet).

Forums

The original SMBX forums were up until July 2010. Redigit and administrators Kyasarin and Luminous were tired of babysitting the community, it was too much for them to handle. Shortly (a few days) after, bikcmp created forums under his server and they lasted for two weeks, failing for different reasons (bikcmp described it as "the worst two weeks of his life"). CaptainTrek created new forums August 25th under his server. They suffered from a huge data purge/server failure in early January 2011. They were rebuilt from scratch. CaptainTrek then went on hiatus for two weeks or so in January/February, outraging the community again. The forums were brought back and are standing to this day at http://trekweb.org/smbx-forum/

Release on MFGG

Super Mario Bros. X Version 1.1 was released on MFGG in July 2009. It had no music as the music took up too much space. To this date, no newer version has been released on MFGG due to the enormous size of this game. It currently has a rating of 9.2 on the main site.
