Super Mario Boom is a jokegame developed by Supernova as part of his April Fools prank. On the main site and forum topic, it looks like a game where Mario is a toilet. Upon running the game however, it is completely different contrasting what the audience might expect. The actual nature of the game is a typical SMB3-ish game with nearly everything in the game tons exploding, ranging from stomped Goombas, coins that have been sent out of their ? Block, and even Mario himself when he dies.

Fake story

" Dr. Eggman is getting tired of Sonic foiling his plans. So he decided to go to Mario's universe and genetic engineered furbies. Using his secret bio-technology, he has turned furbies as Bowser's army as disguise. In the progress he has transformed Peach into a peach, Daisy into a daisy, Toad into a toad, Luigi into a heck yes, Waluigi into Waaa, Wario into warrior, Yoshi into a Roushi, and of course Mario into a toilet. With everyone being a coward, Mario decided to take on Dr. Eggman's army and destroy them once and for all! "

— Supernova, from the game's forum topic.

Gameplay

Super Mario Boom plays like a typical Mario game, where Mario can run, jump, hit ? Blocks, stomp on certain enemies, and more. One gameplay element that isn't really found in a whole lot of Mario games, is the health system, which works like in Super Mario Bros. 2, except that since there are power-ups in the game, collecting them will give Mario an extra hit point, and losing them will not affect his health. In the end of each level is a goal tape, which functions exactly like the one in Super Mario World.

The levels in the game are made from 16 chunks, which are randomly stitched in order form a level. They also use a random environment, which doesn't really affect gameplay at all, except for the forest one, which includes fog that can make seeing what's in the bottom side of the level a bit difficult. The game seems to go on forever, only ending when Mario loses all of his lives.

Power-ups

There are only three power-ups in the whole game, which can all be found inside some ? Blocks:

  • Mushroom - These restore one of Mario's hit points.
  • Fire Flower - Flowers that can give Mario the ability to shoot fireballs.
  • Bomb Flower - Fan-made power-ups that can allow Mario to throw bombs, which will shortly then explode, damaging any enemies close to it.

Reception

Super Mario Boom received a positive reception so far. It got two positive reviews on the main site so far, which praised the music and randomly generated levels, although criticism was given to the controls and physics. It currently holds an average score of 7.5/10 on the main site.

Super Mario Boom won the Game of the Month award of May 2016.

Trivia

  • When Mario dies, there's a Grand Theft Auto V styled "Wasted" screen.
