Sonic Boom was the first recorded Sonic fangame ever created by the fangaming community and quite possibly the first internet fangame as well (Before then there were very few fangames, most of which were homebrew ROMs (Such as Somari) or minor edits to other games). Due to its age, Sonic Boom isn't a very good fangame anymore, however it was a remarkable achievement in the day and inspired many more Sonic fangames afterwards.
