Save the Goombas was Hello's entry for Minigame Competition #28 in 2007. In this game, players must guide a group of Goombas trapped in a cave to a special star that will warp them out of the room. However, Spinies and spikes are also present, and touching those will hurt the Goombas and force the player to restart the current level. Players can manipulate only two kinds of items in the game, both using the mouse: bricks, which disappear when clicked, and switch blocks, which make exclamation-point blocks become solid or transparent. A commonly-used Super Mario Bros. medley (an MP3 file) plays as background music. Black Squirrel's tilesets are used for graphics, although the Goomba and Spiny sprites are unique. There appears to be no story, and nothing particularly notable happens upon completion of the game, except for showing the high scores.

Reception

Save the Goombas drew comparisons to Lemmings and to Hello's earlier game Mario's Run. Reviews for this game average out to 8.3, and most of the comments were favorable, although a few players thought the game was too difficult. There's also a glitch that can cause Goombas and Spinies to move to a different row if a switch block is hit at just the right time - similar to a problem in the later Present Panic.
