Paper Bowser World is a Mario fangame created by Toodles Team (known for his custom Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door sprites). The game itself is also a custom work based from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door; in fact, it is a direct parody of the Bowser platforming stages from that game. The game itself spans sixteen levels, many of which are based on real levels from Super Mario Bros., and four additional secret levels, on two game modes (Bowser and Kammy), leaving a total of forty levels in all.

Story

Kammy Koopa has discovered that Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach are going on a two week vacation. Upon reporting this news to Bowser, he immediately sets out to find Princess Peach, outraged at the thought of going two whole weeks without being able to kidnap her. Meanwhile, Kammy goes for a relaxing walk. While she is walking, she discovers a mysterious black box. A voice from inside the box promises to do something very cool for her is she lets him out…

Gameplay

Typical Paper Bowser World Gameplay

The gameplay depends drastically on which mode is chosen; for example, "Bowser" mode is especially easy. The idea was to create a comical parody of the original Super Mario Bros. Also, the Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door segments that inspired Paper Bowser World were relatively simple, so Toodles Team added many more levels, made Bowser not quite as powerfull as in the original game, and removed his ability to ground-pound.

However, Bowser mode remains easier (except in some castle levels), and more humorous. "Kammy" mode is more in tune with Mario gameplay, as she is much smaller, and has less destructive potential in her magic attack than Bowser does in his fire breath. Ergo, all of Kammy's levels have been slightly edited for her gameplay by removing bricks, changing trap locations, etc.

Controls

The controls are as follows:

  • Left arrow: Move character left.
  • Right arrow: Move character right.
  • Up arrow: Make character jump.
  • Space: Use special attack (Bowser breathes fire, Kammy shoots a spell).
  • Enter: Pause the game, make selections, and progress dialogue.
  • Esc: Return to the title screen, and exit the game.

Sequels

Paper Bowser World received two sequels, the first being Paper Bowser World: Operation G.R.O.M. which was released on two years later. The trequel, Paper Bowser World 3 was released another three years later.

Trivia

  • At the end of each world, Bowser encounters a Toad who utters the phrase, "Thank you Mario but our Princess is in another castle!" Each then responds in a different manner, after realizing that it's Bowser, not Mario, who "rescued" them.
  • At the end of each world, Kammy find what she thinks is her wand, only discover that the wand does not belong to her. This is a reference to Super Mario Bros. 3, when Mario would collect a wand and the end of each world.
  • The secret levels are called the "Minus World", which is yet another reference to Super Mario Bros.
  • The game took exactly three months to make: production started on May 11, 2006, and was completed on August 11, 2006.
  • The voice that says "Toodles Team!" at the start of the game is the voice of Toodles Team's character on the forum: Toodles the Horse.
  • At first, it appeared that Paper Bowser World would not appear on MFGG.net, not because it was declined, but because the file size was too large.
  • Paper Bowser World was nominated for nine of MFGG's 2006 Awards.
  • Paper Bowser World won the MFGG 2006 Awards for:
    • Best Game
    • Best Sprites
    • Most Replay Value
    • Best Story
    • Best Setting (in a tie with Super Mario World: Dark Horizon)
  • The "boxart" looks like an edited version of the SMB boxart.
  • There are two sequels to the game: Paper Bowser World 2 and Paper Bowser World: Back in Action which is still in production.
