PNG, or the Portable Network Graphics image, is an increasingly popular image storage format. It was designed to replace GIF for web use.

PNG is well known for having lossless compression (unless set otherwise); it can produce images identical to BMPs while being only a fraction of the file size. It also supports alpha-transparency, unlike GIFs. Also unlike GIF, it does not support animation normally, however, the APNG format is a backwards-compatible alternate that supports animation.
