PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is an increasingly popular image storage format. It was designed to replace GIF for web use, and in many cases it replaces most other formats aside from JPG.

PNG is well known for having lossless compression (unless set otherwise); it can produce images identical to BMPs while being only a fraction of the file size. It also supports alpha-transparency, unlike GIFs. Also unlike GIF, it does not support animation, but the MNG and APNG formats do.
