MyBB
MyBB is forum software used by many communities all over the Internet, and MFGG transitioned to a new MyBB-based board to replace the old phpBB boards that ran from 2009 to 2017. The MyBB board launched on November 27, 2017.
Back in 2009, the MFGG forums still used the old Invision forum system, which was rapidly showing its age. The administration considered using MyBB to replace the Invision boards, but they opted to go with phpBB instead, citing phpBB's stronger security and better features for converting old skins. A new set of administrators also considered switching to MyBB in 2013, but instead they simply updated phpBB 3.0.x to the latest version.
By 2017, MFGG was still using phpBB 3.0.12. This was deemed undesirable, because phpBB 3.0.x's support period has ended, and modern plug-ins typically require a newer version of phpBB. Upgrading to phpBB 3.2.x would have required fixing all the skins and existing plug-ins, and the MFGG administrators decided that it would be just as easy to upgrade to MyBB, which they felt was now superior to phpBB. On September 25, 2017, VinnyVideo set up a test board for MyBB, and Vinny and the rest of the MFGG staff were very happy with the new functionality offered by MFGG. Therefore, they decided to prepare for an official transition.
The new MyBB forum system offers a shiny new skin from Kritter and an array of new features, including post-liking, notifications, a currency system, better anti-spam controls, and lots of other things that should make life more pleasant for both members and staff.
