Mario vs. the Koopas is a well-made MFGG fangame by an obscure user named Castor using Multimedia Fusion. The game was featured in the 30 Games on MFGG Worth Playing feature in Summer 2011. It also won Game of the Month for May 2008.
Overview
Plot
Bowser is attempting to take over the Mushroom Kingdom again, and this time he has assistance from Kamek the Magikoopa.
Gameplay
The game plays out like a regular Super Mario Bros. game, but features some interesting elements such as the Drill Spin move, which is used by holding Down whilst in mid-air. You are also able to throw holdable objects (such as SMW Goombas or Bob-ombs) at different angles, including diagonally. Instead of collecting coins, you have to collect small Stars, and there is a health system taken from Super Mario Galaxy.
What should also be noted is that the graphics in the game were entirely made by Castor - the game's own creator.
Reception
The original game received very positive reviews, and at present has an average score of 8.9 / 10 on the mainsite. Particular areas that were praised were the game's level design and custom graphics. One common negative point was the game's difficulty.
Sequel
Mario vs. the Koopas was named Game of the Month in April 2014. |

In 2014, six years after the original game, a direct sequel titled Mario vs. the Koopas Remix was released by Castor. Some notable changes include the switch from Stars to Coins, the addition of the Wall Jump move, a new Wind Flower powerup which grants Mario the ability to float, and a graphical overhaul of new custom sprites, particularly with enemies. The game also uses a regular level as a level select, instead of a Super Mario Bros. 3-style map screen.
Mario vs. the Koopas Remix received less favorable reviews, leading to an average score of 6.8 / 10. While critics once again cited good level design and custom graphics, they also noted a lack of polish in comparison to the original, and a big lack of after-game replay value. Despite this, it was also awarded Game of the Month for April 2014.
