Mario the Mathematician was made by Hello for Minigame Competition #27, which had a theme of edutainment. In this game, players fight a series of SMB 3 boss characters and can attack them by hitting blocks that reveal math problems. By answering these problems correctly, a fireball will drop down and, if timed correctly, hit the enemy. Incorrect responses - or running out of time - will cost a life for Mario. There are five bosses, each covering a different area of arithmetic: Larry Koopa (addition), Morton Koopa Jr. (subtraction), Wendy O. Koopa (multiplication), Iggy Koopa (division), and finally Bowser (mixed operations). Defeating Bowser will result in a high score. A remix of the SMB 3 boss music is played throughout the entire game.
Story
Mario's trapped in Bowser's Castle, and the only way Mario can escape is by using math to defeat Bowser and four of the Koopalings.
Reception
While Mario the Mathematician is an interesting entry into a rare genre, the majority of reviewers thought the game lacked much entertainment value. Its average score was 5.5. The game also contains a major glitch in the multiplication section, which often involves multiplying by zero; when this happens, all of the possible answers are zero, and whichever one is selected results in the loss of a life. Even though this glitch will cost a few lives each play, the game shouldn't pose much difficulty to those who have mastered elementary-school math.
