Mario Visits His Great Uncle in the USSR 2: Communist Mario (also known simply as Communist Mario) is a fangame by Vimimin. The game's development was started a day after the release of the first game, but took over a year to complete.

Story

Prologue

In the year 1983, Mario finds himself floating in a cold, featureless white void, surrounded by nothing but pillars and a reflective floor. Upon traversing between many of them, he stumbles upon the legendary "CCCP Mushroom", which grants Mario the power of throwing Communist hammers. At this point in time, Mario refuses to ascribe fully to the Communist methodology, but he sees value in it nonetheless.

Shortly afterwards, Mario is transported into the Television World - a grand static landscape within a vintage cathode ray tube TV set - wherein he must jump between several pipes stretching into infinity. He encounters one of many toads, who congratulates Mario on finding the Communist hammers and even teaches him how to use them, but Mario must continue onward and stop many floating Paratroopas with his hammers to make platforms that he can jump between.

Upon reaching a bridged area, he encounters Wart outside of the Television World, much to his shock and disgust. Wart is a villain of Russia, a powerful politician who aspires to one day take over the entirety of the USSR and enslave its many citizens; all whilst taking power completely legally and by the rules. Mario gives Wart chase, but he finds himself lost within the Devil's Swirls.

Continued

After struggling to hold his own in the Devil's Many Swirls, Mario succeeds in saving his own health from dropping completely by collecting time itself to restore his youth. In spite of success and having left the dreaded Swirls, Mario contemplates what he is doing, and decides that although it makes him technically aligned with Wart, he claims himself fully Communist and progresses forward to Wart's new residence - the Kremlin Palace.

It is now 1985. After his lengthy years-long journey, Mario challenges many random ostriches to a duel as he arrives at Wart's home, and even finds another friendly toad whom he quickly disregards for he has more important business to attend to. Mario finally finds Wart and his cronies, but they give more chase to ensure that Mario will never stop Wart's regime from taking over. It's already too late as Wart has reached one of the highest positions of the land, but Mario refuses to give up. Nonetheless, Wart instructs one of his larger lackeys to battle Mario one-on-one, which proves problematic for our mushroom hero.

During the fight, Mario repeatedly slings his hammers at the fierce giant Ninji, and while the attacks prove damaging, the duel ultimately leaves Mario scarred and bruised by the time he follows Wart into the nightmare realm.

Climax (or: A Final Duel)

Although the flames of the nightmare realm (or "Hell" as it is traditionally referred to) remind Mario of the horrible dreams he had in his youth, he nonetheless continues onward and encounters many of the same enemies that Wart hired in the 2 years before. After re-purposing more Paratroopa shells as platforms, Mario finally finds the legendary Fire Flower, which he grabs and allows him to withstand the eternal fires of Hell. In a nearby room, Mario finally corners Wart...

Wart, however, is unfazed. He cackles at Mario's ridiculous getup, and scoffs at the notion that Mario has been doing all of this independently, claiming it's in a desperate bid to appeal to his great uncle's empowering attitude and beliefs. Mario tries to rebuff him, but without even getting in another word, Wart informs Mario that he has killed his great uncle and intends to do the same to Mario. Shaken and emotionally scarred, Mario is left with no choice but to battle Wart while his heart is permanently wounded.

The fight with Wart is intense; thrilling, even. Wart has control over Hell's environment as well as his own fireballs, leaving Mario outmatched in projectiles. As he walks back and forth on the skull bridge, Wart tries to swipe at Mario himself, leaving Mario entirely vulnerable as he has to dodge Wart's menacing figure and attacks. From beginning to end, the duel with Wart is an especially challenging one, but Mario ultimately succeeds in killing Wart and claiming back the land of the USSR for the people. However, it came at an expensive cost...

Epilogue

As Mario walks in the soft grass back to his village, his bittersweet victory rings hollow in his ideology and ambitions. Mario decides that there is simply no way he can stay in the USSR, so he decides to return home to Brooklyn and live with his brother while he figures out his life. This, of course, is directly continued in the next canonical entry in the franchise, "Super Mario Bros."

Meaning

Largely considered an artistic experiment on what a fangame can be, the game's meaning has confused (and even amused) many members - some have even questioned if the game actually has a real meaning. Vimimin has purposefully left the game's depth and message(s) up to the player, and tends to avoid speaking at length about the game's story (aside from elaborating on what's already in the game itself).
