Mario Kart: Beanbean Circuit is a fangame which was created by Mario Gamer and Shadz.

Orgins

In late 2003, (Exact date unknown) Shadz pitched an idea for a Mario Kart fangame. Mario Gamer turned him down on several occasions stating that the game would be impossible to program. Several attempts later Mario Gamer finally agreed. The game was started before Mario Kart: Double Dash came out and so was modeled after that. It was also about the time Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga's...saga hit. Thus it being Beanbean Circuit.

Production

Production begins

Shadz quickly whipped up a few karts and showed them to Mario Gamer. Stating that it would be a pain to animate and program the game was given a side scrolling layout, much like the game Excitebike. The game was originally called "Mario and Luigi Racing" and within a few weeks the basic menu was set up. After many disagreements a character line-up was created. Levels were planned out and modes as well as engine specs were also made. At the start of 2004, the basics of the game were finally appearing, but the problems were not over yet.

Engine

The engine for Mario Kart: Beanbean Circuit was, as Mario Gamer predicted, complicated. Shadz claimed he would program with his skills. However it became apparent has himself was not getting anything done. The first member to take a swing at it was Flare from Pixeltendo. When he finished the engine was satisfactory and production went into effect using this engine. In late 2004, BadAssBill from Pixeltendo offered to make a better engine. Of course, Shadz could not refuse.

The engine was started, though never finished. Thus making it unusable. With Flare's basic engine long gone Mario Gamer turned to Yoshiman in late 2005. His engine was built off of the past two version and is currently the closest to being finished. It is still in use today.

Graphics

The graphics used in Mario Kart: Beanbean Circuit is a mix of ripped objects from Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga as well as custom srites. Shadz handled most of this area creating Karts for most characters. Mario Gamer deals with most of the basic ripping from the game to assemble the levels and poses.

Level Design

All 16 levels in Mario Kart: Beanbean Circuit are based off of Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga locations. There are only a few recurring levels from past Mario Kart games. Mario Gamer currently handles most of the Level Design. This position was first filled by Flare, who created the entire first track. Shadow has also created a level by himself. Mario Gamer currently has two levels 100% complete and another six in development.

Music

All music in the game was taken from various video games using MIDI format. However in 2005 Yoshiman offered to make a new soundtrack for the entire game. Most of the music is new however you will notice some remixes. A seperate soundtrack is set for release fallowing the game.

Name Changes

Mario Kart: Beanbean Circuit was first called Mario and Luigi Racing. It was changed in 2004 to Mario Kart Bean Circuit. Later another bean was added as well as a :. This version is the current name. Some code names have included; Mario Kart PC, Mario Kart Beanbean Cup, Mario and Luigi Kart, and Mario Kart Superstar Cup.

Shadz leaves the project

In August 2005 Shadz left the project as well as the internet completely. He did this without warning and hasn't appeared since. Basicly leaving the project in his hands, Mario Gamer has been determined to finish this project. Numerous sightings of Shadz have occurred. Some on new AIM names and message boards. However none of these have been proven. Shadz was apparently spotted on World of Warcraft, a game he was addicted to in his last months online. This is most likely to be real.

Video

The first video of the game in action was released on May 23, 2006. However it focused more on levels then actual gameplay. It was set to the beat of Yoshiman's main theme creating sort of a teaser trailer. Ironicly, several people reported seeing Shadz online that day.

However in MFGG's 2006 awards it pulled a Lost and wasn't nominated for a single catagory.

Canceled

On December 9th, 2006 Mario Gamer announced the game was cancelled until further notice. The main reason stated was lack of interest from everyone and the consistency of staff failing to get things done. It is not known if there are any plans to pickup the project again.
