Mario Drinks A Glass of Milk was made by LangtonLion64 for April Fools Day 2019. In this game, Mario must drink all of the milk in the fridge, across multiple levels. This "jokegame" is very short, and was only developed in the space of a week, which began as soon as the idea popped into the creator's head.

Gameplay

Beginning a level as Mario, you get to run and around jump like a typical Mario platformer, but you also have a health meter shaped like a milk bottle. That is until you are recommended to open the fridge found in each level. Then Mario can grab the single bottle of milk found in each fridge. The gameplay then changes to a form of button masher - the left of the screen will show both a stamina meter that gradually depletes, and a meter with a moving cow on it and a cursor on top. Pressing the Control key rapidly will make the cursor jump upward, and the goal is to keep the cursor highlighted on the cow which will fill up the stamina meter. The movement pattern of the cow changes for each level.

If the stamina meter reaches the top, the level is beaten, else if Mario's stamina runs out he will choke on the milk and lose a life. Certain levels introduce other gimmicks, such as the spooky forest level that has Boos that can interrupt Mario by damaging him. Mario is still able to jump while drinking milk. Also, while the game has a score system, with the number of points received for beating each level specified before a level starts, the player's final score will ultimately be the same on every playthrough regardless of how long they take.

Spoilers! Plot/ending information may follow (highlight to read):
In the second phase of the Milk Man fight, Mario gets the ability to use the Marrow Blade attack. With the Control key, a spinning bone projectile can be thrown, and its trajectory can be changed with the arrow keys. This is the only way to damage and defeat Milk Man.

Story

The game begins in Mario and Luigi's house. Mario walks up to the fridge, grabs a glass of milk from the fridge and starts to drink it. After finishing it off, he tosses it aside, wipes his mustache clean of milk, and teleports out of the stage Mega Man-style. After beating the "tutorial" level, Mario goes to multiple other places, specifically a grassland, an icy mountain, a spooky forest and a volcano. He proceeds to drink all of the different places' milk bottles in the same fashion.

Spoilers! Plot/ending information may follow (highlight to read):
After this, one last level set in a dark wasteland is opened up. Mario immediately goes to drink the milk, but the milk turns out to be poisoned. Once Mario falls to the floor, an unusual character named Milk Man appears, with a design similar to those of a Robot Master from the Mega Man series. Milk Man introduces himself, and tells Mario that he had been drinking and therefore stealing Milk Man's milk the whole time, and he wants revenge by challenging him to a fight.

Mario and Milk Man duel, with Milk Man using a variety of milk-based attacks, including a milk-shooting blaster and exploding bagged milk. Mario is completely hopeless as his opponent is completely unaffected by his attempts at stomping. As a result, Mario falls to the floor again, appearing defeated in front of a taunting Milk Man, telling Mario that he'll never see his precious "Princess Dairy" ever again. Suddenly, Mario gets up, and uses the power of the milk he had drank, as well as their calcium content, to transform, which impresses Milk Man. He turns into a skeleton, and gets the ability to throw bones at Milk Man to finally damage him.

After Milk Man is defeated, Mario (who returns back to normal) walks to the right of the screen, which leads him to Princess Dairy in a reference to the ending of Super Mario Land. However, Dairy is transformed into a cow and jumps away. After this happens, curtains fall on the scene, referencing the ending of Super Mario Bros. 3. However, after a few seconds, it is revealed to have all been a dream of Mario's from which he finally wakes up from (referencing Super Mario Bros. 2). In another twist, it is then revealed to be a dream within a dream, with Luigi being the one who was really dreaming.

The next morning, Luigi talks to Mario about his strange dream, and how Mario was going around the world drinking milk. Mario appears unimpressed, and reminds Luigi that he himself is lactose-intolerant, and he especially shouldn't be drinking milk before he goes to sleep. Mario then discusses with Luigi what kind of costume he was thinking of wearing for Halloween, to which he suggests the idea of a skeleton, making Luigi freak out and run away. The game ends with Mario actually drinking a glass of milk, saying that he likes the taste more than he thought he would.

Reception

The game has an average score of 9/10 on the mainsite. The (mostly) custom graphics, humor and soundtrack (largely taken from SNES Mega Man games) were praised, but the game's length and certain gameplay aspects were criticized. The game would go on to receive the Best Humor and Most Overlooked awards at the 2019 MFGG Awards.

Sequels

A year after its release and in response to its popularity, Langton made a sequel to Mario Drinks Milk A Glass of Milk, aptly titled Luigi Doesn't Drink A Glass of Milk. 3 year later, another sequel titled Wario DESTROYS A Glass of Milk was released, being the final entry in the Glass of Milk trilogy.
