Super Battle Bros is a fighting-based fangame created by Miles.

The general gameplay consists of three or more characters fighting to be the last one standing, or for the most coins or points. Most of the aspects of the game can be customized in the menus, such as character physics, appearance, starting power-ups, and much more. The game's main appearance consists of Super Mario World sprites mixed in with Black Squirrel's tileset, though there are some arenas that use different styles for the environment; by default they change the sprites of the bros and enemies to compensate for the style difference.

Story

Mario and Luigi have been really bored lately. None of the known villains have been up to anything evil, and the brothers are not really feeling up to normal sports. When they encounter a mysterious blue clone of Luigi one day, it is decided that battling is the way to go.

Features

  • Customizable controls
  • Loads of options
  • 11 battle arenas
  • 3 game types
  • Up to 3 players
  • Extra AI options
  • Power-ups that can be combined

Game Types

Slayer

Players fight until all but one has been knocked out or has fallen out of the battle area. The last bro available is the winner, even if he himself faints or falls before the match has restarted.

Coin Battle

Players scramble to get the most coins. Coins appear in certain places, and respawn a few seconds after they've been collected. The first player to collect a custom set amount of coins is the winner.

Score Attack

Players battle to get the most points. Points are earned by attacking the other players, collecting power-ups, and defeating enemies, and are lost when getting hit. The first player to earn a custom set amount of points is the winner.

Power-Ups/Items

Mushroom

The standard red-and-white mushroom adds one heart to a character's remaining power. It will stand up any player that has been knocked over. In Score Attack, it gives a player 100 points.

Fire 'Shroom

This mushroom is orange with red dots. It gives the player the ability to throw fireballs if they have more than one heart remaining. This item also allows characters to burn any opponent that they use a special attack on. Fireballs can be kicked back.

Jetpack 'Shroom

This mushroom is teal with an up arrow design on it. It gives the player a jetpack if they have more than one heart remaining. This item allows characters to fly up and float down slowly. Any characters that get too close to the exhaust flame can get burned, or knocked down if the item is at full power.

Lightning 'Shroom

This mushroom is blue with a lightning bolt on it and a flashing yellow skin. It gives the player the ability to throw lightning-summoning balls if they have more than one heart remaining, but this ability is not lost when the player is low on life. This also gives the player the ability to call down a stronger lightning strike at his own position, though this costs hearts and can be fatal. Lightning balls can not be kicked back.

Poison 'Shroom

This mushroom is purple, has a skull on it, and has flashing red eyes. This will knock a player over and take a heart from him, or points if the game type is set to Score Attack.

Reception

The game currently holds a 9.6 score average on the main site. The game has had mostly positive feedback, with the large amount of customization possible and skill of the AI characters usually cited. One common criticism of the game is the lack of different music used. This game received the Most Overlooked Award during the 2011 MFGG Awards.

Trivia

- The project actually began as a LAN game experiment, which then turned into an AI experiment (at which point all LAN functionality was removed).

- The game was going to be one half of a two part game as a bonus mode, but the story part of the game ("Just For Fun") was cancelled due to numerous problems. What remained was the battling half of the game ("Super Battle Bros,") which was later passed off as a finished game.
