Mario: Revolution (M:R) is a fangame currently in development by Xgoff. Unlike most Mario fangames, M:R is not a cartoony adaptation of the Mario series. Shifting from a bright, fantasy theme to a more realistic science-fiction based one, M:R provides a different perspective of Mario's first adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Currently, M:R is based mostly off of SMB, SMB3, SMRPG, and PM. Some content from SMB2 may be included, and a few concepts from SMB the Movie are used.

M:R is mainly an independent project by Xgoff, with only sound effects, music, and certain graphics being used from outside sources.

Story

Still under development, but obviously the usual Mario storyline executed in a different fashion.

Unsorted/Miscellaneous Information

Graphical
M:R is expected to be highly graphics-intensive, and will include a large amount of graphical settings. In addition, the game can be run in either 30 or 60 FPS modes:

  • 30 FPS Adjusted: Should be used for slower computers. Because the framerate is lower, the game may appear slightly choppy, but the lower refresh rate allows more time to be spent processing events.
  • 60 FPS: Provides smooth framerate at the expense of some power. Large amounts of on-screen activity may slow the game down. Should only be used with more powerful computers.
  • AUTO (maybe): The game will attempt to run at 60 FPS, but if the framerate drops below 50, it will automatically and temporarily switch into 30 FPS Adjusted mode.

M:R will be designed to run both modes at the same speed, so the 30 FPS mode will not appear to be in "slow motion."

Controls
M:R will require the use of 10 keys (4 directional, and 6 action buttons), and should be played on a gamepad. The keys will be user definable, but by default they are:

  • Left/Right Arrows: Move left/right
  • Up Arrow: Enter doors or pipes
  • Down Arrow: Crouch or enter pipes
  • Primary Action*: F
  • Secondary Action*: D
  • Jump: Space
  • Run: Shift
  • Previous Item: A
  • Next Item: S

* The functions of these keys depend on the equipped item or Mario's current state (normal, swimming, etc.)

Audio
M:R will support "pseudo-3D" stereo sound, ie volume and position of a sound depends on its location. Because this can also be computationally intensive, the amount of sounds that can be played at once will be able to be changed.

Worlds
M:R will feature Mario's standard environment set, such as desert and grassland levels. Currently, there are seven worlds planned. Each world will feature a boss and (except 7) a major item. In this respect, M:R resembles a Legend of Zelda game; there is a main "dungeon/temple" of the world, a major item that is required to complete the area (and other places in the game), and a boss that must be defeated by using that item against it.

Interactive Cutscenes
One-time "cutscenes" that allow the player to participate, and must be completed to continue. Currently 2 are planned, both near the end of the game.

HUD

The HUD used in M:R will show several status items like health, inventory, and the secondary action meter. It can be set to appear all at once or in individual segments, and with or without autohide. It will also appear after a certain period of non-activity; this and the autohide delay can also be changed.

Scrapped Ideas

Autobomb
Originally a vehicle that could be driven around, it was removed due to possible difficulties in designing suitable levels for it. Planned controls:

  • Primary Action: Aim turret upwards
  • Secondary Action: Aim turret downwards
  • Jump: Fire cannon

This list may be expanded later

Trivia

  • M:R borrows heavily from ROTSR, one of Xgoff's earlier projects.
  • This is Xgoff's last attempt at a major project, apart from MPUZ. All other projects he works on will be smaller, mostly engnines, how-tos, or "favors."
