Mallow Maze 2: Switch it Up is a fangame created by mtbottlepro and released in 2009. It is one of many infamous fangames, largely due to its widespread negative reception. Despite its name, a first Mallow Maze is not known to have been created.

Gameplay

Mallow Maze 2 is a simplistic puzzle game featuring 8-bit Super Mario Bros. graphics. While the game refers to the character the player controls throughout the game as Mallow, one of the lead characters from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, it is in fact just the graphic of a cloud tile from SMB. What is also notable is that Mallow is yellow, not white.

The game consists of the basic goal of collecting the Star at the end of each level. There are a total of 12 levels. You control "Mallow" with the arrow keys, using four-directional movement. You can also press SPACE to restart a level. The puzzle element of the game comes from level-manipulating gimmicks, for example Question Blocks which cause Brick Blocks to disappear. The Question Block of a certain color destroys the Brick Blocks of a corresponding color.

During certain levels, the player can control two differently-colored Mallows at the same time, usually in different areas of a level. Despite all this, the game can be sometimes boring or frustrating due to the levels being laid out so that you have to constantly go back to a previous point in a level, for example after activating a Question Block.

There are no sound effects, and only one song, albeit one that is non-Mario related. It is an instrumental version of a song called "Forever" by the artist Drake. The song, supposedly in MP3 format, most likely takes up the vast majority of the game's file size.

The levels in the game are usually no bigger than 320x240 pixels big, save for the final level, which is 640x480. After completing the last level, the game displays the text "YOU WIN!!" for one second before immediately closing.

Reception

The game has received massively negative reviews. Many reviewers on the main site have rated it a 1/10, claiming it to be the worst game on the site. The main flaws cited were its easiness, tediousness, lack of polish, and the fact you clearly aren't playing as the titular Mallow. A common positive given was the visuals. However, and quite ironically, Mario350, the creator of notoriously bad games such as Mario Minigame Mayhem, reviewed the game and gave it a 7/10.
