Kitten Command is an open-source fangame by onpon4, which was originally released as a gift for Willsaber, on the Secret Santa 2015 event. onpon4 later updated the fangame, and released it on the main site on November 5, 2016. Some inspiration in the fangame was taken from Missle Command. It is one of the few fangames that use a joystick for an input option.

Gameplay

The player is in control of a gun-wielding Texan cat, who must defend their homeland from a Koopa Kingdom invasion. The cat can move around and shoot, the latter of which will slightly decrease the amount of score. Score will be given when a bullet shot from the cat's gun defeats an enemy. If the cat comes to contact with an enemy or a projectile, they'll be unconscious for a set amount of time. On the left side of the screen, there is a brick wall, which can be damaged on contact by enemies. When a certain spot on it gets enough damage, a passageway to the cat's homeland will be revealed. The game will be over once an enemy managed to get to the cat's homeland.

There are five difficulties in the game, which affects how thick the brick wall is, how long the cat will stay unconscious when in contact with a hazard, and what enemies will show up starting from when. They all their own high scores.

Enemies

  • Goomba - The most common ones in the game. Only one shot is enough to take these out, and they are quite slow.
  • Green Koopa Troopa - Slow enemies that will go into their shell and be sent to the right after a few shots are taken. They can crash into any enemies once they are in their shell, which will take out both the enemy it crashed into and itself.
  • Spiny - These enemies take several shots in order to take out. Their speed isn't very high.
  • Red Koopa Troopa - These enemies act like their green counterparts, except that they are faster (in fact, they are the fastest enemies in the game), and crashing into an enemy will send themselves back to the left side. The cat can shoot it back to the right. A few crashes while they are in their shell will take them out.
  • Hammer Bro - They are very slow, but every once a while, they'll throw a hammer at the cat. They take quite a number of shots before they get taken out.

Reception

Kitten Command has so far received only two reviews on the main site, one of which gave it a score of 7/10 and the gave it a score of 2/10. The positive one praised the simple yet engaging gameplay and the variety of enemies, but it criticized how wide apart the music and sound effects are from each other in terms of volume (although onpon4 stated that the problem seems to be only on Windows). The negative review considered the gameplay as boring and to be too easy.

The game currently has an average score of 4.5/10 on the main site.
