GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is a common format found on the internet, due to its ability to display animations. It is slowly being replaced by PNG, the latter supporting more colors, alpha transparency, and usually smaller file sizes; however, GIF remains in use when animations are needed, but even here it is starting to be replaced with SWF.
GIF is a semi-lossless format; it is lossless for images containing 256 or fewer colors, but lossy for images containing more. It has good compression, though it is usually slightly outdone by PNG, even by PNGs that haven't been converted to 8 bits.
