GIF, or Graphics Interchange Format, is an indexed graphic data format known for its ability to save low-color animated images. It is gradually being displaced by PNG, which has recently developed its own animation capabilities.

As GIF is indexed, an image can only hold 256 colors (or 255 with transparency), making it plausible for spritework or pixel art, or perhaps oekaki. The image may suffer in quality by programs that force colors into the index.
