Extensions (Game Maker)
Extensions were a new feature to the popular game creation utility series, introduced for version 7. While in GM6 it was only possible to expand the functionality of Game Maker's built-in features with the help of DLLs, which was a quite inconvenient way, the extension packages offer a much more convenient and easier way to both create and work with such expansions.
Extensions can be created with the Game Maker Extension Maker, which can be downloaded from YoYo Games.
The Extension Maker allows you to add one or more of the following:
- DLLs
- GML code files
- Action libs
- All sorts of external resources like images, sounds, or text files
In order to use an Extension, which comes in a format called "*.gex", you need Game Maker 7 Pro or higher.
Then you go to the Extension Packages menu in the resource tree and install this file.
Now, any game you're making in Game Maker can simply import this extension and all functions defined in it will be available to the programmer and even highlighted in the code editor as if they were native functions.
