Badges are little pictures that appear below a member's member bar in the forums, which originally started in the Invision forums by Retriever II. Badges are stacked and therefore a number is displayed next to one if at least two of that badge are collected. They are used to motivate contributing members, and indicate what achievements they have done and the groups they're in on MFGG. The difficultly in getting them varies from badge to badge and may depend on the person that's collecting them.

History

An example of a badge award given to another member.

Before Retriever II implemented badges into the forum software after the Invision version of the forums were introduced, badges were actually used back in the earlier years. For a brief period of time in 2002, a member (currently unknown who) presented the idea of giving out small awards he believed certain members should receive. Eventually this idea grew to other members who performed the same activity, upon being grateful for receiving a textual award from this member. As it continued branching out to other members, it turned into actual award medals given out to members. The medals somehow reformed into being named "badges," and not long after, members were creating image badges for each other, which could then be put into their signatures for others to see. It's not known if the idea for badges on the forum software years later was sparked by this or not.

When the Invision forums came, the badge system that is used even to this day was introduced by Retriever II. During the Invision era, the graphics used to display the badges are from the original Paper Mario. Unlike the badge system today, the number displayed next to a badge does not go beyond five, and it'll displayed as 5+ in that case. At some point, probably during when the phpBB version of the forums is around, the badges switched to using the graphics from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, although in especially recent times some badges use graphics from other sources or are even made from scratch. Also, the numbers besides them can now go beyond five.

For quite a long time, the staff badges are represented with the Lucky Day, Lucky Start, and Pretty Lucky badges along with recolors of such badges. However, on February 2014, SEVA made new designs for the staff badges, based on the Royal Stickers from Paper Mario: Sticker Star, along with a new badge that is solely given to the founder, Thunder Dragon.
