Aventura de Luigi (Luigi's Adventure in Spanish) is an indirect sequel to Marioy 2 and was VinnyVideo's third fangame on MFGG. He worked on it sporadically over a period of more than a year, although most of the levels were designed in January 2009. Aventura de Luigi is a traditional 2-D platform game that uses the Ultramario Engine with relatively few modifications. The most prominent changes are replacing the Black Squirrel sprites, which VinnyVideo felt were overused, with conventional Super Mario All-Stars/Super Mario World graphics. The game was basically finished in summer 2009, although VinnyVideo and Miles ironed out a few glitches in a future update. There are 26 full levels.

Story

The full story appears in the game's manual and on the F1 help screen. As with most of VinnyVideo's games, the story contains unorthodox themes, including the mortgage crisis and drug abuse. In short, Mario is out of town saving the world in another unspecified fangame, so Luigi has been called to save an island community from havoc. Lemmy Koopa has returned to the Mushroom Worlds after amassing great wealth in the drug trade, and he's now trying to turn the booming community into a world of drugs. VinnyVideo has never pretended that the story is very good, although it does possess originality and some wit.

Levels

VinnyVideo includes a mix of both traditional and unorthodox levels in his game. Naval Nastiness, for example, is a remixed version of the battleships from World 8 in Super Mario Bros. 3. Many of the levels are pretty wacky. Vinny's favorite level, Twilight Incitement, is inspired by the "pod worlds" of the original Super Mario Bros. - until the darkness begins setting in. If the player waits too long, the screen will be pitch-black and the level will be nearly impossible to complete. Perhaps the most unusual level in the game is Painted Panic, which is based on the sprites and stamps seen in Mario Paint.

VinnyVideo also includes a couple of references to things no one else is likely to understand. The D.O.M. (Dangerous Octopus Museum) level is a tribute to a circa-1996 sketch of a "fangame" level he designed. An alert player, however, will note that Blooper is not an octopus. The Mario Paint level also includes references to the 1960's song "Bus Stop Lady," Barney & Friends, and VinnyVideo's earlier game Darunia-Saria 2008. Small portions of the sample levels in the Ultramario Engine template are also used, and the cemetery level includes tombstones ripped from Jeff Silvers's Super Mario Epic 2.

Aventura de Luigi is the first VinnyVideo game to use a map screen. While nearly all of the tiles originate from Super Mario World, the action scene icons are those of the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 3. The map's geographical features are loosely based on the levels.

Music

In contrast to VinnyVideo's first game, Marioy 2, Aventura de Luigi mostly uses remixed versions of traditional Mario themes. There are exceptions, however; for instance, the Rapid Rapids level uses the Rapids Ride music from The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. Other songs from the Zelda series also appear, as well as music from EarthBound (The New Age Retro Hippie Theme). Some levels also use music that sounds similar to the original music, including the Mario Paint background music and the Super Mario World castle theme. The music was well-received by most players,

Reception

Aventura de Luigi has been reviewed three times so far with an average score of 7.0. Most players agreed that the levels were well-designed, but the number of glitches and the mediocre final boss hurt the score.

Update

On January 2, 2013, VinnyVideo released an updated version of this game. With the help of Miles, Vinny made a number of graphical improvements, removed glitches, made the Switch Palace and Top Secret Area fully functional, spiced up the boss battle, added Stop 'n' Swop capability, and drastically cut the game's file size. This new version earned a more favorable reception, and it was nominated for Best Level Design at the 2012 MFGG Awards.
