Aftermath is a Metroidvania minigame made by Yrr. It won the Minigame Competition #53.

Plot

An air strike performed by Bowser's troops heavily destroys a huge part of the Mushroom Kingdom, including Peach's castle, creating a giant crater and leaving all of its innhabitants unconcious and defenseless, with the only exception being Mario and Toad. Toad then finds a missile stuck in the ground, which has not yet exploded. He then has the idea to use it with the purpose of escaping the crater and flying to a safe place. Unfortunately, he does not have the necessary materials to make the missile work and fly, so he tells Mario to find inside the crater those required materials.

Reception

Aftermath was met with a generally positive reception from MFGGers. It currently holds an average score of 7.8 out of 10 in the main site.

Reviewers praised its simplistic and tiny graphics. Mysterypower stated that the sprites are really well detailed for their size and that all the objects in the game are perfectly recognizable, while Mechant, Lord Hyper, and CaptainSyrup all said that they fit perfectly with the gloomy and post-apocalyiptic atmosphere of the game. However, Tehlivingpencil argued that some sprites are too hard to see due to their little size. As well, esteban complained about the size of the sprites, stating that playing the game in Full Screen Mode reduces their quality when making them bigger.

The gameplay was also well received. Both esteban and Tehlivingpencil called the game "challenging", noting that, while there are no true enemies in the game, the placement of the obstacles and puzzle-like use of the switches can still make the game difficult. Mysterypower also said that the puzzles were nice and that the gameplay was simple. He thought as well that the controls were "superb". Nevertheless, some complaints were directed towards the gameplay, too. Lord Hyper was dissapointed for the instant death porduced by contact with the obstacles. Mechant as well thought that the beginning of the game was too difficult because of this. However, he also stated that, after encountering the hidden chests and obtaining their stored powerups, the game becomes a lot easier. Other reviewers have also noted that the game's length is way too short, with Lord Hyper stating that the game's main mission "isn't enough for a game like this", and Blutorus saying that the game took him only 20 minutes to complete.

The sound received mixed reviews. While some reviewers appreciated the gloomy and catchy music, others found the lack of sound and music to be annoying, with some saying that one song for an entire game is insufficient.

Many reviewers criticized the game's ending, stating that it was too depressive and dark for a Mario game. On his review, Blutorus did not look favorably at it, calling it "middle finger-ish", and saying that he felt he "played the game for nothing", thinking that the player's goal is not accomplished once the game is finished. However, he also called it as "clever" and "inventive", since many Mario games, in contrast to this one, have a happy ending where everything is resolved in a positive way.

The replay value of the game was also poorly received, with reviewers criticizing the lack of secrets, and the fact that the needed items' locations can be easy to remember after playing the game once.
