PNG, or Portable Network Graphics, is a graphic data format designed to replace GIF and just about every other graphic format.

PNG is famous for its virtually lossless compression while maintaining a smaller file size in comparison to almost any other format displaying almost any image. PNG also supports alpha channels, making it ideal for web design where logos and other elements may be recycled for use on multiple backgrounds without sacrificing their anti-aliasing.

Unofficial extensions

PNG officially does not support animation, however:

• APNG is an increasingly popular addition to PNG which ... allows PNG files to be animated. It is also arguably backwards compatible: browsers that do not support APNG will simply display the first frame of the animation as a regular PNG file.
• MNG is an alternate animation format produced by the original PNG team, although it lacks the arguable backwards-compatibility.
