Random Image

From Mario Fan Games Galaxy Wiki

The Random Image (aka Random Avatar) Fad was unintentionally started by Retriever II. His avatar was actually a PHP file disguised as a jpeg and would load a random image on each page refresh. Some time later, RII posted the .htaccess file and the avatar.jpg PHP file, which could be used on compatible hosts. Techokami and Xgoff soon had random avatars.

Due to problems finding working hosts, the few people who also wanted a random avatar were usually directed to people who could host them.

Unfortunately, the code has a few limitations:

1. All images must be sequentially numbered in *.gif format (regardless of the actual file type)
2. All images must have the same dimensions
3. The host must allow .htaccess and PHP
4. All files must be in the same directory

The actual fad started when a link to randomimage.net was posted. This host once provided an easy method for registered members to have a random avatar, but the site is no longer up.
